Austin has served on the horn faculty at colleges in Michigan, Louisiana and Ohio. He was elected to ICSOM's Governing Board as a Member-at-Large in 2015 and became ICSOM President in 2017, a post that he continues to hold today.Īs a teacher, Dr. In 2013, Paul was instrumental in the drive for the Grand Rapids Symphony to join the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians (ICSOM) and is proud to have served as the first GRS ICSOM Delegate. On a national level, Paul had a meteoric rise at the Regional Orchestra Players' Association (ROPA), being named Delegate, Member-at-Large and Vice President all within one year. Since joining the Grand Rapids Symphony horn section in 1999, Paul has represented his colleagues on many committees, including negotiation, music director and CEO/President searches, and artistic advisory. He holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Tennessee Tech University, and he was a Resident Artist at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. In 1995, Paul Austin was named Gilmore Emerging Artist by the Kalamazoo Arts Council, which allowed him to study in London. Noted by critics for his “absolutely stunning way of playing the horn” (Holzminden Zeitung) as well as being “tender on the warm French Horn” (The Grand Rapids Press), he also has been praised by the Kalamazoo Gazette, which observed how “the audience was charmed, thanks to Austin's witty narratives.” As an orchestral player, chamber musician and pedagogue, Paul Austin currently enjoys a multi-faceted career.
